COMPUTER TIPS
From: Shaffer 50312
This tip is for those who use
printers with ribbon cartridges. I
have the C. Itoh Prowriter, an
excellent printer all in all, except
the ribbon cartridge has an average
lifespan of about 2 months. These
things go for about $8 a shot, so I
figured there has to be a cheaper
alternative.
An ad in Power/Play for ribbon
reinking machines (for about $70) got
me to thinking: can I re-ink the
ribbon myself?
So I got a bottle of ink, an ink
pad and went to work. It was a little
tedious, but 20 minutes work paid off:
The result was much better than a
brand new cartridge. Those cartridges
probably sit around on the shelf for
months, drying up. My manually
re-inked cartridge gave a nice dark,
sharp image on the paper.
All I had to do was turn the manual
crank on the cartridge while holding
the ink pad against the ribbon with
my finger (which I wrapped with a Glad
Bag to prevent a nasty stain). Try
it! With some practice you will be
able to do it without getting much
ink on you. It helps to lightly clamp
the cartidge in a vise, to hold it
steady.

A common way to keep your disk
drive cool is to cut four pencils
about 1 to 2 inches long and put the
erasers in the holes in the bottom of
the drive.
